An early love of the Surrealism movement sparked a life long fascination in the Surreal and was Melody Rose founder Melanie Roseveare’s starting point for the Modern Surrealist collection.
Melanie was influenced by many of the key artists in the movement finding magic and beauty in the unexpected, the disregarded and the unconventional.
‘Surrealism is not a style – but a state of mind and aims to subvert reality. To find the uncanny in the everyday. To tap into our unconscious desires and bring dreams to life.’ This quote from the Surrealism Beyond Borders exhibition at The Tate Modern gallery in London evokes the essence of surrealism that continues to influence Melanie to this day.
The Modern Surrealist designs are infused with a contemporary twist, both eccentrically fun as well as exquisitely handcrafted. Tea sets with nudes ambling along, butterflies floating out of a hat. If Monty Python were having high tea with Rene Magritte, they would be drinking from these cups.
Melody Rose x The Lee Miller Estate
One of leading artists of the Surrealism movement was Lee Miller who lived with Roland Penrose at Farleys House in East Sussex for over 35 years. Farleys House and Gallery is now home to the Lee Miller archives and is open to the public to visit during the spring and summer months.
It was a great joy to be commissioned by the Lee Miller Estate and the Hepworth Wakefield Gallery to design tableware ‘launched’ to celebrate their 2018 Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain exhibition at The Hepworth Gallery.
The Lee Miller designs won the ACE’s award for Best Range 2019. Although the tea sets have sold out, there are a few dinner plates available at The Hepworth Wakefield Gallery you can find here: Melody Rose at the Hepworth Wakefield.
Additionally, the Lee Miller estate has recommissioned Melody Rose to make a further limited edition of 50 teacups and saucers and now available from the Farley House Gallery click here to buy.
